Behaviour

Best kept in groups of at least five fish, Metynnis lippincottianus are generally peaceful community fish that can coexist with other larger peaceful species, although much smaller fish may be seen as food. They tend to occupy the middle and top areas of the aquarium, so it is advisable to select tankmates that occupy the bottom of the tank to create contrast. Suitable tankmates include larger, peaceful catfish such as plecos and doradids.

Feeding and Diet

Metynnis lippincottianus require a diet rich in vegetable matter, including courgette, cucumber, peas, spring greens, and other green vegetables. They also benefit from commercial foods like algae wafers, spirulina, and vegetable flake. These fish readily accept most aquarium foods and also enjoy treats of bloodworm and brineshrimp.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

There are no reported breeding instances in hobby settings, but it is assumed that the breeding habits of Metynnis lippincottianus are similar to those of m. argenteus. Sexual dimorphism is evident in the elongated anal fin of the male, which may display a red tinge.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, Metynnis lippincottianus inhabit densely planted river tributaries. Replicating this environment in captivity can be challenging due to their plant-eating tendencies. Opting for hardy plants that require regular replacement or artificial plants like fabric and silk varieties is recommended. These fish appreciate dim lighting and areas of refuge to enhance their confidence, and they thrive in aquariums with decent water flow.

Aquarium Setup

For Metynnis lippincottianus, a tank setup that resembles their natural habitat is ideal. They thrive in densely planted river tributaries in the wild, so in captivity, opting for hardy or artificial plants is advised due to their plant-eating behavior. Providing dim lighting and areas of refuge can help boost their confidence. These fish enjoy areas with rapid water flow, so incorporating a decent water flow in the aquarium is beneficial.
