General Description

The Ceros Tetra (Moenkhausia Ceros) is a rather rare fish in the UK hobby, sporadically appearing among imported species. Belonging to the Characidae family, it falls into the Incertae Sedis taxonomic category due to uncertainties in the Moenkhausia genus. Typically reaching up to 5.0 cm in size, this species is characterized by its peaceful nature and preference for shoaling.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care of the Ceros Tetra, a tank size of at least 70 litres is recommended, and it is advisable to keep them in groups of 6 or more. The recommended water conditions include a pH range of 5.5-7.0, a temperature of 24-26°C, and a water hardness of 5-15°dH. Setting up the tank to mimic its natural habitat involves utilizing river sand as a substrate, driftwood branches, twisted roots, and dried leaves to stain the water a tea-like color. Alternatively, a well-maintained heavily planted tank can also suit this species.

Behaviour

Known for its peaceful demeanor, the Ceros Tetra thrives best when housed with compatible tankmates, preferably other South American species such as certain tetras, dwarf cichlids, Corydoras, and Loricariids. It is recommended to keep them in groups of 6 or more, as they are shoaling by nature and display their most captivating behaviors in the company of their own kind.

Feeding and Diet

The Ceros Tetra is an easy species to feed, accepting a wide variety of foods. To promote optimal health and vibrant coloration, regular meals should consist of small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and brine shrimp, supplemented with high-quality dried flakes and granules.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Although specific details on reproduction are scarce, breeding the Ceros Tetra is likely similar to other species in the Moenkhausia genus. Breeding can be induced in a separate tank with dim lighting, fine-leaved plants, and soft acidic water conditions. Adult females are generally fuller-bodied than males.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, the Ceros Tetra hails from the Amazon basin in Peru and Brazil, occupying slow-moving rivers, tributaries, and floodplain lakes. Their natural habitat features dimly lit waters with minimal aquatic plants, often enriched with driftwood, twisted roots, and dried leaves to mimic the blackwater conditions they prefer.
