General Description

The Green Neon Tetra, scientifically known as Paracheirodon simulans, is a less common species within the tetra family, known for its striking green lateral stripe. Not bred commercially, it is occasionally referred to as the 'false neon tetra' or 'blue neon tetra.' This species features a variable number of golden metallic scales in the wild, often marketed as 'platinum' or 'gold.' Paracheirodon simulans is distinguished from its congeners by subtle color pattern differences.

Aquarium Setup

The Green Neon Tetra thrives best in a heavily planted aquarium with a sandy substrate, driftwood, and branches to replicate its natural habitat. Adding dried leaf litter not only enhances aesthetics but also fosters microbe colonies, serving as a vital food source for fry. Maintaining a dimly lit tank and incorporating plant species like Microsorum, Taxiphyllum, or Cryptocoryne is recommended. Floating vegetation, such as Ceratopteris, is also appreciated by this species, which is sensitive to water fluctuations.

Behaviour

This species is peaceful with other fish species but is not ideal for community tanks due to its small size and specific care requirements. Green Neon Tetras are social and tend to form schools, so it is recommended to keep a minimum of 8-10 specimens in a tank. They exhibit more interesting behavior when in larger groups and paired with diminutive, non-aggressive fish species.

Feeding and Diet

The Green Neon Tetra is omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, crustaceans, algae, fallen fruit, and more in its natural habitat. In captivity, they can survive on dried foods but thrive on a diverse diet that includes live and frozen foods like chironomid larvae, mosquito larvae, Daphnia, and Moina to mimic their natural feeding habits.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Sexually mature female Green Neon Tetras are typically larger and rounder-bodied than males. However, this species is not commercially bred, and there is limited information available on its specific reproductive behavior and dimorphism.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in the middle-to-upper Rio Negro drainage in Brazil and the Rio Orinoco system in the border region of Venezuela and Colombia, the Green Neon Tetra inhabits blackwater environments with slow to moderately-flowing water. It exclusively resides in the upper terra firme regions of tributary drainages, characterized by acidic, soft water with minimal conductivity and a brownish tint from organic matter decomposition. This species shows a preference for warmer temperatures and distinct habitat conditions compared to other Paracheirodon species.
