General Description
The Dorado, scientifically known as Salminus Brasiliensis, gets its common name from the Portuguese word for "golden," reflecting its stunning golden coloration. This species, belonging to the Characidae family, can reach a maximum size of 140.0cm and is primarily a riverine species, although it can also be found in lakes and ponds. Native to Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina, the Dorado is a highly prized game fish in its natural habitat.
Aquarium Setup
For a Dorado, a minimum tank size of 9000 litres is necessary due to their large size and territorial behavior. Decor is not crucial, but a massive filtration system is essential to manage the substantial biological waste produced. Adequate water flow in the tank is also required to mimic riverine conditions. Water conditions must be maintained within a pH range of 6.0-7.5, a temperature range of 22-28°C, and a water hardness of 2-15°dH (see table).
Behaviour
Dorados exhibit a piscivorous nature, preying mainly on fish. They have a unique feeding behavior where they will not consume anything they cannot fit into their mouths, making tankmate selection challenging. Interestingly, juvenile Dorados have been observed cohabiting with larger species like Cichla and arowana in captivity, despite their eventual predatory nature.
Feeding and Diet
In their natural habitat, Dorados feed predominantly on fish, requiring large amounts of whole fish such as trout in captivity. While juveniles may accept alternative foods like prawns and lancefish, sustaining an adult Dorado's diet can be expensive and challenging for aquarists.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction of Dorados in home aquaria is deemed impossible and should not be considered as a viable option. The sexual dimorphism of this species remains unknown, adding to the mystery surrounding their breeding habits.
Habitat and Distribution
Dorados primarily inhabit rivers but can also be found in lakes and ponds within their native range of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. Their natural habitat preference and behavior make them unsuitable for most home aquarium setups.
