General Description:The Lipstick Leporinus, scientifically known as Leporinus Arcus, is part of the diverse genera in the order Characiformes, consisting of approximately 90 valid species. These fish are commonly referred to as "headstanders" due to their tendency to swim at an oblique 'head-down' angle. They exhibit a variety of adaptations in dentition and jaw structure, and are typically moderately-elongate with some exceptions, such as the relatively deep-bodied Abramites.

Aquarium Setup:When creating an aquarium setup for the Lipstick Leporinus, it is crucial to provide sufficient space and adequate oxygenation. A natural-style tank could include a sandy substrate, leaf litter, large driftwood branches, twisted roots, and floating vegetation. Water quality should be closely monitored, and these fish should not be introduced to a biologically immature aquarium. Additionally, a secure cover is recommended as Leporinus Arcus are known to be skilled jumpers (see table for specific water conditions).

Behaviour:Leporinus Arcus are known for their active nature and may exhibit schooling behavior in the aquarium. They are relatively peaceful, but as with many fish, aggression can occur, especially if they feel crowded or threatened. Providing adequate hiding spaces and maintaining a harmonious tank environment can help mitigate any potential conflicts.

Feeding and Diet:In their natural habitat, Lipstick Leporinus predominantly feed on algae, invertebrates, and organic detritus. They are considered benthic omnivores and will accept a wide range of foods in captivity. However, it is best to avoid high-protein diets and offer a varied diet to ensure their nutritional needs are met.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:There is no recorded information available regarding the reproduction of Leporinus Arcus. In terms of dimorphism, differences between male and female Lipstick Leporinus may not be visually obvious, and further research may be needed to explore any distinct characteristics related to sex.

Habitat and Distribution:The type locality for Leporinus Arcus is 'Tukeit, Guyana,' and they are found in various river drainages across Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. These rivers include the Orinoco, Essequibo, and upper Courantyne basins. Additionally, records exist from the upper Amazon basin in Guyana, particularly in the Takutu river basin, which is part of the upper Rio Branco.
