General Description
Leporinus Friderici, commonly known as Threespot Leporinus, is a species within the diverse genus Leporinus in the order Characiformes. The genus includes around 90 valid species and exhibits a polyphyletic lineage, with certain species reclassified into the genus Hypomasticus. Anostomids, commonly referred to as "headstanders," are moderately-elongate fish distributed in tropical and subtropical South America, displaying varied oral morphology and adaptations in dentition and jaw structure.
Aquarium Setup
The setup for Leporinus Friderici involves a spacious tank of a minimum of 1500 liters with a natural-style arrangement including sandy substrate, leaf litter, driftwood branches, twisted roots, and floating vegetation. Water quality is crucial, requiring consistent oxygenation and mature biological filtration. Specific water conditions include a hardness of 36-268ppm, a pH range of 5.0-8.0, and a temperature between 20-28°C.
Behaviour
Members of the Leporinus genus, including L. Friderici, display a characteristic oblique "head-down" swimming posture typical of anostomids. These fish are active and may exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods. They are known to be relatively peaceful but can become aggressive towards conspecifics or other tank mates if space is limited.
Feeding and Diet
Threespot Leporinus are benthic omnivores, feeding on algae, invertebrates, and organic detritus in their natural habitat. In an aquarium setting, they are adaptable and accept a variety of foods; however, it is recommended to avoid high-protein diets. A balanced diet including quality flake food, pellets, live or frozen invertebrates, and vegetable matter is ideal for their health and well-being.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information regarding the reproductive behavior and dimorphism of Leporinus Friderici specifically is limited. However, anostomids generally exhibit typical egg-scattering spawning behavior. Sexual dimorphism in this species may involve subtle differences in coloration or fin length, although further research may be needed to confirm distinct visual traits.
Habitat and Distribution
Threespot Leporinus are native to the Amazon river system in countries such as Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia, with additional populations found in coastal drainages of Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, and Trinidad. Variations in morphology and coloration can be observed among different populations, showcasing the adaptability of this species to diverse habitats within its range.
