General Description

The Pygmy Hatchetfish, scientifically known as Carnegiella Myersi, is the smallest and most delicate among hatchetfish species. It is distinguished by its elongated profile with a shallow rounded keel, a characteristic feature of the Gasteropelecidae family. The family is identified by specific traits such as a heavily-keeled body shape that resembles a hatchet head and certain bone fusions in the skeletal structure, setting them apart within the Characiformes order.

Aquarium Setup

To house Carnegiella Myersi, a well-matured aquarium of at least 45 liters is required, maintaining water conditions with a pH range of 4.0-7.0, hardness between 18-108ppm, and a temperature of 23-26°C. The tank should have floating plants, minimal water movement, dim lighting, and a secure lid since hatchetfish are prone to jumping. Driftwood branches and dried leaf litter can be added to aid in the growth of microbe colonies for possible fry nutrition and benefit from the tannins released during leaf decay.

Behaviour

The Pygmy Hatchetfish is characterized as very peaceful but due to its small size and timid nature, it is not suitable for general community tanks. It thrives best when kept in groups of at least six individuals and should be housed with similarly sized, peaceful characids, smaller catfish species, and without active tankmates. Although they are known for their supposed ability to fly above water by beating their pectoral fins, this has been disproven, with their "flight" being a modified threat response.

Feeding and Diet

Primarily insectivores, Carnegiella Myersi feed on small insects found on the water surface but readily accept prepared foods like flakes, micro pellets, bloodworms, and wingless fruit flies. Ensuring a varied diet is essential for their optimal health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Details on the reproduction of Carnegiella Myersi have not been recorded. It is suggested that female hatchetfish may appear rounder, especially when viewed from above, indicating a possible sexual dimorphism in the species.

Habitat and Distribution

In their natural habitat, Pygmy Hatchetfish are found in shaded, shallow woodland streams within the Peruvian Amazon basin. They have also been documented in Bolivia, where individuals exhibit a deeper-bodied morphology compared to their Peruvian counterparts.
