General Description
The Silver Hatchetfish, scientifically known as Gasteropelecus Levis, belongs to the family Gasteropelecidae within the order Characiformes. This species is characterized by its silver coloration and unique body shape, resembling a hatchet head, due to possessing an enlarged, heavily-muscled pectoral girdle.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Silver Hatchetfish, it is essential to cover a significant portion of the water surface with floating plants to provide security and lessen skittish behavior. They prefer a tank with a bit of current for swimming. Tank decor is not critical, but they thrive in setups with floating plants, driftwood branches, sand substrate, and leaf litter. A tightly fitting tank cover is crucial as Silver Hatchetfish are capable of leaping several meters in a single jump.
Behaviour
Silver Hatchetfish are known for their peaceful nature but can be nervous and shy, especially around more boisterous species during feeding. They prefer the company of their own kind and should ideally be kept in groups of at least half a dozen to ensure their well-being. Good tankmates include small fish that inhabit different parts of the tank, such as tetras, dwarf cichlids, and catfish like Corydoras.
Feeding and Diet
In the wild, Silver Hatchetfish feed on insects above and below the water surface, crustaceans, and worms. Though initially reluctant to accept dried food, they can be trained to consume it over time. A substantial part of their diet should consist of live or frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and gut-loaded Drosophila fruit flies if available.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
The reproductive behavior of Silver Hatchetfish is still unknown. However, it is believed to breed similarly to the marbled hatchetfish. Sexual dimorphism is noticeable, with females appearing rounder-bodied, especially when carrying eggs.
Habitat and Distribution
Silver Hatchetfish are indigenous to the lower Amazon river basin in the state of Pará, Brazil, including the lower sections of the rios Tocantins and Guamá. They are primarily found in open waters of larger igarapés, streams, and floodplain lakes, preferring habitats with floating vegetation for cover.
