General Description

Copella eigenmanni, commonly known as the Eigenmann's pencilfish, is a peaceful but not entirely suitable fish for a general community aquarium. It is best kept with similar-sized characids, gasteropelecids, lebiasinids, smaller catfish species, and diminutive, non-predatory cichlids. This species, identifiable by its unique coloration and body features, is originally from the Orinoco basin and may occasionally be found in the aquarium trade.

Aquarium Setup

In an aquarium setup ideal for Copella eigenmanni, a densely-planted tank with overhanging vegetation, roots, and branches is recommended. Adding floating vegetation is beneficial as this species prefers dimly-lit conditions and occupies the upper water column. Dried leaf litter, alder cones, and well-oxygenated water with slight surface agitation contribute to creating a suitable habitat. It is crucial not to introduce this species to a biologically immature tank due to its sensitivity to water chemistry fluctuations.

Behaviour

Maintaining a mixed-sex group of at least 8-10 Eigenmann's pencilfish specimens in the aquarium encourages natural behavior and color display. These fish exhibit fascinating behaviors, particularly the males competing for female attention. Including schooling fish in the tank provides security for C. eigenmanni, enhancing their overall well-being and creating a more natural spectacle in the aquarium.

Feeding and Diet

Copella eigenmanni is a micropredator that feeds on tiny invertebrates and zooplankton in its natural habitat. In an aquarium, they accept dried foods but should also be offered small live and frozen meals like Artemia nauplii, Moina, and grindal worms daily. Introducing small insects such as crickets or fruit flies after feeding them fish flakes or vegetable matter ensures a varied diet that meets their nutritional requirements.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

During reproduction, the male Eigenmann's pencilfish guards the eggs laid among vegetation. Controlled breeding in a separate tank can maximize fry yield. Male pencilfish establish temporary territories for spawning, after which the female can be removed, leaving the male to tend the eggs. The males grow larger, develop more extended fins, and display intense colors, while females are rounder-bodied, particularly when gravid.

Habitat and Distribution

Copella eigenmanni is primarily found in the llanos regions of Colombia and Venezuela, specifically in the Río Orinoco system and its major tributaries like the ríos Meta, Caroní, and Apure. Although there are records from Guyana and Peru, they require confirmation to validate the distribution of this species.
