General Description

The Barred Pencilfish is a sought-after species in the aquarium trade, identifiable by its distinct color pattern of vertically-oriented bars on each flank. It is a micropredator in nature, feeding on tiny invertebrates and zooplankton. Belonging to the Lebiasinidae family within the Characiformes order, this species is small, with a maximum size of 3.0cm and should ideally be kept alone or with compatible tankmates due to its timid nature.

Aquarium Setup

The Barred Pencilfish thrives in a heavily-planted tank with a dark substrate, providing broken lines of sight to reduce skittishness. Floating plants, driftwood branches, and dried leaf litter create a natural environment, fostering microbe colonies important for fry development. Stable water conditions with a temperature range of 22-28°C, hardness of 18-90ppm, and pH of 4.0-6.5 are crucial. Gentle filtration and an established tank are necessary for their well-being (see table).

Behaviour

Barred Pencilfish are peaceful but not recommended for community tanks due to their small size and shy demeanor. They exhibit shoaling behavior, with males occasionally sparring during daylight hours. When kept in groups of 10 or more, aggression is dispersed, and the fish display bolder and more natural behaviors. They make ideal dither fish for certain cichlids as they inhabit the middle-to-upper tank regions and don't prey on fry.

Feeding and Diet

In their natural habitat, Barred Pencilfish feed on tiny invertebrates and zooplankton. In captivity, they accept dried foods but should also be offered small live and frozen options like Artemia nauplii and Moina daily. Providing a varied diet ensures their optimal health and vibrant colors.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

While reproduction in captivity is rare, it can be achieved in mature, densely-planted tanks. Eggs are typically laid in batches on the undersides of plant leaves. Adult males are more intensely colored, have brighter fin colors, and are slimmer compared to females. Fry should be fed small-grade foods like Paramecium and gradually introduced to larger foods as they grow.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to the Mazaruni River system in Guyana, Barred Pencilfish inhabit slow-moving blackwater tributaries with dense aquatic vegetation and submerged woody structures. They coexist with N. minimus, with the former occupying open water and the latter favoring marginal zones with cover. Reports also suggest occurrences in Venezuela, although further confirmation is needed.
