Aquarium Setup

The Striped Dwarf Cichlid, also known as Nannacara taenia, thrives in a tank size of at least 70 litres, with a preference for softer waters. Ideal tank conditions include a well-planted environment with moderate water flow, incorporating bogwood, branches, and a sandy substrate for decoration. Strong lighting should be avoided to cater to their habitat needs as specified in the table (see table).

Behaviour

This species is characterized by its shy nature, emphasizing the importance of keeping tankmates restricted to peaceful community fish. In a community setting, it is best housed with small tetras, barbs, and corydoras catfish to ensure a harmonious environment.

Feeding and Diet

The Striped Dwarf Cichlid is not a picky eater and readily accepts a variety of dried and prepared foods. To maintain optimal health, offering live and frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp is recommended to supplement their diet regularly.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction can be moderately challenging for this cichlid due to their shy demeanor. Breeding efforts are more successful in a separate breeding tank, away from the community setup. Conditioning the pair with abundant live foods like bloodworms is crucial for successful breeding. The male and female engage in typical dwarf cichlid courtship behaviors before spawning in a small cave or plant pot. The female guards the eggs, while the male protects the surrounding territory. Upon hatching, the fry can be fed with newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered foods.

Sexual dimorphism is evident, with the male being smaller in size. The female displays a distinctive secondary line parallel to the main lateral marking, which is absent in males. Additionally, females darken in coloration during breeding conditions.

Habitat and Distribution

Nannacara taenia is native to small, densely planted streams in the Rio Tocantins basin near Belém, Pará, Brazil. These habitats provide the ideal conditions for the species to thrive naturally.
