General Description

The Regan's Cichlid, scientifically known as Vieja Regani, is an appealing yet seldom observed cichlid native to the River Coatzacoalcos basin in western Mexico. Belonging to the Cichlidae family and Cichlasomatinae subfamily, these fish can grow up to 30.0cm in length and are previously identified as cichlasoma regani in some instances.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, a tank of at least 500 litres is recommended with a setup that includes rocks, bogwood, and branches that provide ample territories for all fish. To prevent potential aggression, ensure the female is not bullied, especially in a community tank. Sand or fine gravel substrate is preferred, and the decor should be securely positioned to avoid damage to the aquarium glass if moved by the fish. Lighting levels are not crucial, but a reliable filtration system is essential.

Behaviour

Regan's Cichlid is moderately aggressive, making successful cohabitation challenging, particularly in a community of sturdy Central American cichlids. While a bonded pair can harmoniously coexist, caution must be exercised to prevent female bullying. Territorial disputes may arise if adequate space and hiding spots are not provided.

Feeding and Diet

Primarily herbivorous, the Regan's Cichlid grazes on algae, detritus, and aufwuchs in its natural habitat. To supplement their diet, offer high-quality cichlid pellets and meaty foods like prawn, mussel, and white fish. Providing a varied diet ensures the nutritional requirements of these fish are met.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Regan's Cichlids can be challenging due to potential aggression, especially during spawning when the male may exhibit aggression towards the female. If successful, the pair will spawn on a prepared site, with the eggs hatching in 2-3 days. The male is larger, more colorful, and develops a nuchal hump, along with extended dorsal and anal finnage, distinguishing it from the female.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, Regan's Cichlids inhabit rocky rivers and are endemic to the River Coatzacoalcos basin in western Mexico. Their preference for rocky environments reflects the need for similar settings in captivity to mimic their natural habitat accurately. Water conditions between a pH of 6.8-7.5, hardness of 0-20°dH, and a temperature range of 24-26°C are ideal for their well-being.
