General Description
The Apistogramma Macmasteri, assigned the code A120 under the DATZ 'A-number' system, is a species belonging to the Cichlidae family within the order Perciformes. This cichlid comes in different color forms, with the ornamental 'red' form identified as A121. The genus Apistogramma is known for its diversity, with around 70 valid species and more awaiting description. The species have been categorized into lineages, complexes, and groups by experts to facilitate differentiation and prevent hybridization.
Aquarium Setup
To set up an aquarium for Apistogramma Macmasteri, a soft, sandy substrate with driftwood, roots, and branches creating caves and shady areas is recommended. Adding dried leaf litter like beech, oak, or Ketapang almond leaves can enhance the natural feel and promote the growth of beneficial microorganisms. Dim lighting and plant species such as Microsorum, Taxiphyllum, Cryptocoryne, and Anubias are suitable. Gentle filtration, low water flow, and minimal large water changes support the well-being of this species.
Behaviour
Captive-raised Apistogramma Macmasteri are suitable for community tanks, while wild specimens are best kept alone or with small dither fishes like Nannostomus spp. They should ideally not be mixed with other Apistogramma to prevent aggression and territorial issues.
Feeding and Diet
Apistogramma Macmasteri are primarily carnivorous, feeding on benthic invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, they should be offered live and frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, and chironomid larvae regularly. They can also adapt to accepting pelleted food over flakes.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
These fish are substrate spawners, with females laying eggs in crevices. Females take care of the eggs and fry, sometimes requiring the removal of the male in smaller tanks due to potential aggression. Males are larger, more colorful, and develop extended fins compared to females.
Habitat and Distribution
Apistogramma Macmasteri is known to inhabit the Río Guaytiquía and Río Metica basins in the upper Río Meta system in Colombia. They prefer areas with adequate cover and structure in their natural habitat.
