General Description

The Apistogramma Norberti, previously known as A. sp. ‘großmaul’ or ‘bigmouth,' belongs to the Cichlidae family within the Perciformes order. This species is among the plethora of South American cichlid genera, and in the aquarium trade, it has been coded as A190 under the DATZ system. With around 70 identified species and many more awaiting formal description, the genus Apistogramma showcases a diverse range of color forms, often categorized into various species lineages and groups for better organization and breeding management.

Aquarium Setup

For an optimal aquarium setup for Apistogramma Norberti, maintaining ample cover and structure is essential. Decor elements like ceramic flowerpots, plastic piping, and natural materials create a suitable environment. A naturalistic tank arrangement may include a sandy substrate, driftwood, and branches to form shaded areas and caves. Adding dried leaf litter, such as beech or oak, fosters microbe growth, benefiting fry as a secondary food source. Dim lighting and plant species like Microsorum, Taxiphyllum, Cryptocoryne, and Anubias are recommended, with floating vegetation patches to diffuse light. Moderate water flow, soft water with a pH range of 4.5-6.5, and a temperature of 24-28°C are ideal for these fish.

Behaviour

Captive-raised Apistogramma Norberti are preferable for community tanks, while wild specimens are best kept alone or with small 'dither' fishes like Nannostomus or Micropoecilia species. It is advisable not to mix them with other Apistogramma species due to potential hybridization risks. These fish can exhibit aggressive behavior, particularly the female during post-spawning, necessitating the removal of the male in smaller aquariums to prevent aggression towards the fry.

Feeding and Diet

Primarily carnivorous, Apistogramma Norberti mainly feeds on benthic invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, offering live or frozen foods like Artemia, Daphnia, and chironomid larvae is recommended, with a gradual introduction to dried alternatives. Pelleted food is preferred over flakes, and regular feeding with a varied diet ensures their nutritional needs are met.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Apistogramma Norberti is a substrate spawner, with females laying eggs in crevices or cavities among the decor. The female takes responsibility for caring for the eggs and fry post-spawning, being potentially aggressive towards the male in smaller tanks. Males are larger, more colorful, and develop extended fins compared to females, exhibiting sexual dimorphism in their physical appearance.

Habitat and Distribution

This species is native to minor jungle streams in the Río Tahuayo basin and the Río Tamshiyacu drainage in northeastern Peru. These habitats undergo significant fluctuations in water volume seasonally, providing the fish with an environment conducive to their natural behavior and breeding patterns.
