General Description
Apistogramma Sp. 'Kelleri' is a small, undescribed species of cichlid first introduced to the aquarium trade in 2008. Belonging to the Cichlidae family and Perciformes order, it reaches a maximum size of approximately 8.0cm. The species is primarily carnivorous, feeding on benthic invertebrates in its natural habitat.
Aquarium Setup
The recommended minimum tank size for Apistogramma Sp. 'Kelleri' is 60 litres, with a setup that includes ample cover and structure like ceramic flowerpots, plastic piping, and natural decor elements. A sandy substrate, wood roots, branch formations, and dried leaf litter are suggested for creating a natural environment. Lighting should be dim, and plant species like Microsorum, Taxiphyllum, Cryptocoryne, and Anubias are ideal. Weekly water changes of 20-30% are advised to maintain water quality within the parameters of 22-29°C temperature, pH of 4.0-6.0, and hardness of 0-90ppm.
Behaviour
A solitary existence or cohabitation with small 'dither' fish like Nannostomus spp. is preferred for Apistogramma Sp. 'Kelleri'. It is generally mild-mannered towards conspecifics and should not be housed with other Apistogramma species to avoid aggression.
Feeding and Diet
Apistogramma Sp. 'Kelleri' is primarily carnivorous, with a diet comprising live and frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, and chironomid larvae. While they readily accept pelleted food, live and frozen options are recommended for optimal nutrition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Reproduction in Apistogramma Sp. 'Kelleri' is described as facultative, biparental, and larviphorous mouthbrooding. Males exhibit larger size, more vibrant colors, and extended fins compared to females. The species demonstrates flexibility in parental care strategies, adapting mouthbrooding or using shallow pits for egg and fry maintenance based on environmental conditions.
Habitat and Distribution
This species is native to minor tributaries, likely on the north bank of the Solimões River close to Leticia, in the Amazonas department of Colombia. Specific habitat preferences are not extensively documented, but related species like A. barlowi are found in cool, fast-flowing waters with clear water, acidic to neutral pH, and sandy substrates with minimal vegetation.
