General Description

Apistogramma viejita, also known as the Red Edge Apis, is a peaceful fish belonging to the Cichlidae family. It is a carnivorous species that primarily feeds on benthic invertebrates in its natural habitat. With a polychromatic nature, A. viejita displays various forms throughout its range, making it an intriguing species for hobbyists to observe.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for Apistogramma viejita, it is crucial to provide ample cover and structure. Decor items like ceramic flowerpots, plastic piping, wood roots, and branches create hiding spots and caves for the fish. A natural-looking substrate with dried leaf litter can mimic the fish's natural habitat. Dim lighting, aquatic plant species like Microsorum and floating vegetation such as Ceratopteris spp., are recommended. Careful attention to filtration to avoid organic waste fluctuations is necessary for their well-being.

Behaviour

Known to be peaceful, A. viejita thrives in a calm community aquarium with small characins, rasboras, and Otocinclus spp. as tankmates. Wild specimens are best kept alone or with small 'dither' fishes like Nannostomus spp. This species should not be mixed with other Apistogramma to prevent territorial conflicts.

Feeding and Diet

Apistogramma viejita is primarily carnivorous, feeding on live and frozen foods such as Artemia, Daphnia, Moina, and chironomid larvae. While they can adapt to dried food, pelleted products are preferred. Offering a varied diet ensures their nutritional needs are met, contributing to their overall health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

As substrate spawners, A. viejita lay eggs in crevices or cavities within the aquarium. Sexually mature males establish territories and exhibit aggression towards other males, but they tolerate the presence of multiple females. Males are larger and more colorful than females, with extended fins. During spawning, females develop a bright yellow livery with distinct black markings.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, Apistogramma viejita prefers shallow, slow-moving waters with abundant vegetation along the shorelines. The fish are commonly found in the Meta basin, Orinoco, Colombia. They thrive in clear water with specific temperature and conductivity levels. Various forms of A. viejita can be found in different localities within Colombia.
