General Description

The Cryptoheros Myrnae, a member of the Cichlidae family, is a relatively rare yet striking species in the aquarium hobby. It is easily bred and visually appealing, making it a sought-after addition to tanks when available. This species can grow up to 100.0 cm in size.

Aquarium Setup

For housing Cryptoheros Myrnae, an 80-liter tank or larger is recommended. The setup should include rocks, wood, and roots to provide hiding spots and potential spawning sites. It is crucial to maintain well-oxygenated water within the parameters of a pH of 7.0-8.5, a temperature range of 23-26°C, and a water hardness of 179-447ppm (see table).

Behaviour

Known to be moderately aggressive, especially during breeding periods, it is advised to house Cryptoheros Myrnae with other Central American cichlids in a sufficiently spacious tank. Peaceful mid and upper-water dwelling species, such as shoals of fish, are ideal tankmates. In their natural habitat, they coexist with livebearers, characins, and freshwater gobies.

Feeding and Diet

Cryptoheros Myrnae are not picky eaters and accept various foods. A diet rich in live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Artemia, and prawn/shrimp is recommended. Additionally, supplementing with high-quality dried foods and incorporating vegetable matter, such as Spirulina or fresh greens, ensures a balanced diet.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding Cryptoheros Myrnae can be facilitated by obtaining a pair from a group of juveniles and allowing them to mature together. During courtship, the male and female display vibrant colors as they prepare the spawning site, usually a cave or similar structure. The female guards the eggs (up to 200) while the male patrols and defends the territory. Young fry are cared for by the parents and transition from brineshrimp nauplii to crushed flakes and cichlid pellets.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, Cryptoheros Myrnae is found on the Atlantic slope of Costa Rica and Panama. It typically inhabits rivers characterized by clear, shallow, swiftly flowing water with a sandy substrate.
