Behaviour

Geophagus brokopondo, unless breeding, displays surprisingly peaceful behavior and does not prey on fish larger than a few millimeters. They tend to exist in loose aggregations, particularly when juveniles, displaying strong grouping instincts. A group of 5-8 individuals is recommended to establish a noticeable dominance hierarchy. It is important to avoid aggressive or territorial substrate-dwelling species as tankmates. Some aquarists have successfully housed them with freshwater stingrays, although caution is advised as instances of disappearance have been reported.

Feeding and Diet

Geophagus brokopondo are benthophagous by nature, sifting mouthfuls of substrate for edible items. Their diet consists of small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, plant material, organic detritus, and sediment. In captivity, a varied diet of high-quality prepared foods, live or frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, Artemia, and mosquito larvae is recommended. Regular feeding throughout the day is advised to mimic their natural browsing behavior and promote optimal growth and condition.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

All members of the G. surinamensis group, including G. brokopondo, are known to be substrate-spawning, mouthbrooding cichlids. There are two breeding strategies observed within the group: immediate (ovophilous) and delayed (larvophilous). Although breeding of G. brokopondo in captivity has not been widely documented, they are believed to exhibit similar reproductive behaviors. No external sexual dimorphism has been reported, although the ovipositor of the female may be visible during spawning.

Habitat and Distribution

Geophagus brokopondo is endemic to the Suriname River drainage in Suriname. Typically found in clear, slightly tannin-stained to blackwater habitats with fine sand substrates, these cichlids thrive in humid tropical climates. The species has been recorded in the Brokopondo Reservoir as well as throughout the middle-to-lower parts of the Suriname watershed. Images depict the fish collected from gently sloping marginal zones or around islands in their natural habitat.

Aquarium Setup

For Geophagus brokopondo, setting up the aquarium with a soft, sandy substrate is crucial for their natural browsing behavior. Coarser materials should be avoided as they can hinder feeding and cause potential harm if ingested. Additional decorations such as driftwood, roots, and branches can be included for aesthetics. Water quality is paramount as these cichlids are sensitive to fluctuations, requiring efficient filtration and regular water changes. Maintaining stable water conditions within a pH range of 5.0-7.0 and a temperature of 25-33°C is essential for their well-being.
