General Description:

The Pearlscale Cichlid, scientifically known as Herichthys Carpintis, is renowned for its stunning bluey green hues and reflective flecks adorning its flanks, making it a visually striking fish. Notoriously aggressive, especially during breeding periods, this large cichlid species can display territorial behavior and may view smaller fish as potential prey.

Aquarium Setup:

To ensure the well-being of Pearlscale Cichlids, it is essential to house them in spacious aquaria with robust filtration systems. Being relatively easy to care for, these cichlids thrive in setups that include territories such as rocks and wood, along with ample open space. However, it is prudent to avoid rooted plants in the substrate as Pearlscale Cichlids are known to dig and uproot vegetation.

Behaviour:

Pearlscale Cichlids exhibit territorial tendencies, particularly evident when breeding, and are known to display aggressive behavior at times. Caution should be exercised when selecting tankmates, as smaller fish may be targeted as food by this species.

Feeding and Diet:

As omnivores, Pearlscale Cichlids readily accept dry foods, with high-quality cichlid pellets being a suitable staple diet. To ensure a well-rounded diet, it is beneficial to supplement their meals with a variety of frozen and live foods. Additionally, offering brine shrimp and regular servings of vegetable or spirulina flakes enhances their nutritional intake.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:

During reproduction, Pearlscale Cichlids engage in substrate spawning, where a bonded pair displays mutual courtship behaviors before laying eggs on a cleaned spawning site, usually a smooth-surfaced rock. The female Pearlscale Cichlid can be identified by a black blotch on its dorsal fin and typically has a longer and deeper body compared to the male.

Habitat and Distribution:

Native to North Mexico, Pearlscale Cichlids are commonly found in lagoons, particularly near the mouth of the Panuco drainage. Thriving in water conditions with a hardness of 8-14°dH, a pH range of 6.5-7.0, and temperatures between 24-26°C, these cichlids prefer habitats that offer suitable breeding sites and ample space for territorial behavior.
