General Description
Laetacara araguaiae, previously known as L. sp. ‘Buckelkopf’ in the aquarium hobby, is a species within the Perciformes order. It is one of seven valid species in the genus Laetacara and is distinguished by various physical characteristics, such as dorsal-fin ray count and scale numbers.
Aquarium Setup
The Laetacara araguaiae species is known to prefer a setup that replicates its natural habitat, including soft, acidic water with ample hiding spots provided by vegetation and decor. A dimly lit aquarium with subdued lighting and a sandy substrate is ideal for these fish. For detailed setup requirements (see table).
Behaviour
Being a cichlid species, Laetacara araguaiae is known for its territorial behavior, especially during breeding periods. They can be relatively peaceful when kept in suitable conditions with compatible tank mates. These fish are also known to exhibit interesting social interactions within their group.
Feeding and Diet
In the aquarium, Laetacara araguaiae readily accepts a varied diet. They can be fed high-quality flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods to ensure a balanced nutritional intake. Offering a mix of protein-rich and vegetable-based foods is recommended for their overall health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Laetacara araguaiae follows a biparental substrate-spawning reproduction strategy. During breeding, both parents take an active role in guarding the eggs and fry. In terms of dimorphism, males of this species may exhibit more intense coloration and slightly larger size compared to females.
Habitat and Distribution
This species is primarily found in the rios Tapajós, Xingu, and Tocantins, which are right-bank tributaries of the lower Amazon basin in Brazil. Populations in different regions may show variations in coloration patterns. The type locality for Laetacara araguaiae is near the rio Verde in the rio Araguaia basin, Estado de Goiás, Brazil.
