General Description
The Red Zebra African Cichlid, scientifically known as Metriaclima estherae, is a Mbuna Cichlid that displays a vibrant red coloration, despite its common name. This species lacks prominent stripes typically found in other members of its genus and species. They are often referred to by various names related to their color, such as Zebra Cichlid, Tilapia Zebra, and False Zebra Mbuna. With a maximum size reaching up to 12.7 cm, these fish are semi-aggressive by temperament.
Aquarium Setup
To keep Red Zebra Cichlids, a minimum tank size of 200 litres is recommended. The aquarium should have a pH level ranging from 7.8 to 8.6, a water hardness of 10-15 KH, and a temperature between 24.4-27.8°C. Behaviour
Red Zebra Cichlids are known for their semi-aggressive nature, especially if they feel crowded or lack defined territories. Establishing a matriarchal family structure, these fish engage in mouth brooding where the female can hold up to 60 eggs in her mouth for 12 to 18 days before releasing the fry. Maintaining a small group with multiple females and one male enhances the breeding potential of this species.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Red Zebra Cichlids have diverse dietary requirements. They readily consume flaked foods, live foods, algae, lettuce, spinach, and duckweed. Providing a varied diet ensures they receive essential nutrients for their overall health and vibrant coloration.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
In terms of reproduction, female Red Zebra Cichlids are crucial in the breeding process. They lay eggs which are then fertilized in their mouths, where the fry develop until being released. This species does not exhibit significant dimorphism, with males and females bearing similar appearances.

Red Zebra Cichlids are native to the rocky shores of Lake Malawi in East Africa. In the wild, they are commonly found in rocky habitats, where they create territories among the crevices and rocks. Their distribution in the wild primarily includes the waters of Lake Malawi.
