General Description
The Salvini Cichlid, scientifically known as Nandopsis salvini, is a vividly colored species also referred to as the Tricolor Cichlid and the Yellow Belly Cichlid. Originating from the lakes and rivers of southern Mexico and northern Central America, these cichlids display a striking appearance with a bright yellow body adorned with dark lines, turquoise-blue dots, and red accents on their fins and body.
Aquarium Setup
To house Salvini Cichlids adequately, a tank of at least 50 gallons with a substrate of fine gravel or sand is necessary, as they do not burrow or disrupt plants. Providing rocks, roots, and plants as territorial divisions is recommended, with ample space left for swimming. While they can coexist with smaller, similarly aggressive fish, their territorial nature and tendency to bite others should be considered.
Behaviour
Salvini Cichlids exhibit aggressive behavior and are territorial, typically engaging in territorial disputes with tankmates. Males can be identified by their pointed fins. Despite their aggression, they are excellent parents, with both male and female actively participating in the care and protection of their fry.
Feeding and Diet
Being omnivorous, Salvini Cichlids accept a variety of prepared and frozen foods, including freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, ocean plankton, as well as flake food and Cichlid pellets. Their diet should be diverse to ensure proper nutrition and health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
During the breeding process, the female Salvini Cichlid meticulously cleans the rocks in the tank before depositing a substantial number of eggs, which can total up to 500. Males can be distinguished by their pointed fins and actively participate in caring for the offspring alongside the female.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Salvini Cichlids are found in the lakes and rivers of southern Mexico and northern Central America. They prefer waters with a pH range of 7.0-8.0, a temperature range of 22.2-26.1°C, and a water hardness level of 9-11 dKH. These colorful cichlids thrive in environments with suitable hiding spots, territories, and open swimming spaces.
