General Description

The Striped Brichardi, scientifically known as Neolamprologus Savoryi, is part of the "Brichardi complex" native to Lake Tanganyika. It can reach a maximum size of 8.0cm and requires a minimum tank size of 70 litres. This species thrives in rocky substrate habitats along the shoreline of Lake Tanganyika.

Aquarium Setup

Ideally, the Striped Brichardi should be housed in a Lake Tanganyika biotope aquarium. The tank setup should include caves made out of piles of rocks, with a sandy substrate. Maintaining water conditions within a pH range of 7.5-9.0, a temperature of 23-27°C, and a water hardness of 8-25°dH is crucial. It's important to create sufficient territories within the setup, especially considering its territorial and aggressive nature.

Behaviour

This species is known for its aggressive and territorial behavior, making it suitable for a species tank. In larger tanks, it can coexist with other small to medium-sized Tanganyikan cichlids that occupy different areas of the tank. The Striped Brichardi is aggressive towards conspecifics and forms monogamous pair bonds. It's recommended to keep only a single pair unless the tank is exceptionally large.

Feeding and Diet

The diet of the Striped Brichardi should consist mainly of live and frozen foods, with dried foods offered less frequently. Some vegetable matter like spirulina or blanched spinach should also be included. Ensuring a varied diet is essential for their overall health and well-being.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding the Striped Brichardi is possible, as it is a cave spawner. Setting up a breeding tank with appropriate dimensions and conditions is crucial for successful reproduction. Sexing this species can be challenging, with adult males typically being larger than females. The pair will remain together for life, and the fry are large enough to consume brine shrimp nauplii shortly after birth.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to Lake Tanganyika, the Striped Brichardi inhabits areas of the shoreline characterized by rocky substrates. It belongs to the Cichlidae family and shares its habitat with a variety of other fish species, each occupying different niches within the ecosystem.
