General Description
The Ocellated Kribensis, scientifically known as Pelvicachromis Subocellatus, is a less commonly seen species in the Pelvicachromis genus, characterized by its higher, shorter body shape and lighter spotting in the upper part of the caudal fin. They can grow up to 8.0cm and are native to Nigeria, Gabon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Ocellated Kribensis, a minimum tank size of 71 litres is recommended, with a water temperature range of 22-26°C, a pH level between 5.5-7.5, and water hardness of 5-20°dH. The tank should feature hiding places, such as clay pots, caves, roots, and driftwood, with a sand or fine gravel substrate. Live and frozen foods should make up the majority of their diet.
Behaviour
Ocellated Kribensis are suitable for a general community tank environment but can become territorial, especially during breeding. They are relatively shy and retiring, so should not be housed with very vigorous or large species. Ideal tankmates include small characins, barbs, danios, rasboras, Corydoras, gouramis, and Loricariids. They can also coexist with other cichlids, with West African Dwarves being the preferred choice, but ample space for territory formation is crucial.
Feeding and Diet
Ocellated Kribensis readily accept various types of food, with live and frozen varieties being essential components of their diet. Offering a diverse diet that includes live, frozen, and dried foods ensures their nutritional needs are met and supports their overall health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Ocellated Kribensis is relatively easy as they are cave spawners and form monogamous pairs. Selecting the largest male and most colorful female from a group of young fish is recommended to establish a compatible pair. The breeding tank setup should include caves for spawning, a temperature of 75-79°F, and pH of 5.5-6.5. During spawning, females display a pink flush on their flanks, while males develop pointed dorsal and anal fins.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Ocellated Kribensis inhabit pools and slow-moving streams in coastal areas. Some of these environments may have brackish water conditions, reflecting their adaptability to varying water parameters. They are primarily found in regions of Nigeria, Gabon, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
