General Description

The Super Vc 10 Hap, scientifically known as Placidochromis Milomo, is a species of cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, particularly in the southern region spanning from Thumbi Island West to Zambo, along the Nankumba Peninsula, and at Nkhata Bay. This species, belonging to the Cichlidae family, exhibits distinctive physical features, with wild-caught specimens showcasing enlarged lips adapted for scraping algae and invertebrates from rocky surfaces. However, in captivity, these prominent lips tend to recede or not develop at all, as they are not essential for obtaining food. Fluctuations in turbidity levels influence the development of their lips in the wild.

Aquarium Setup

To create a suitable habitat for the Super Vc 10 Hap, a tank of at least 200 litres is recommended. The tank should mimic the rocky areas where the fish reside in the wild, with rock piles forming caves and hiding spots. A sand substrate is preferred, and open spaces between the rock formations should be provided for swimming. Water conditions should include a hardness of 10-25°dH, a pH range of 7.6-8.8, and a temperature between 24-28°C. For more detailed information, refer to the provided table.

Behaviour

This cichlid species is relatively peaceful and can thrive in a community setting with larger Malawian fish. It is advised not to house them with boisterous species or very small fish that may feel intimidated by their size. Being solitary in nature, conspecific aggression, especially among male fish, may occur. Therefore, it is recommended to keep only one male unless the tank is spacious enough to accommodate multiple males with several females per male.

Feeding and Diet

The Super Vc 10 Hap is an omnivorous species that readily accepts a variety of live, frozen, and dried foods. A well-rounded diet should include vegetable matter such as spirulina flakes to ensure nutritional balance and overall health.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction in the Super Vc 10 Hap is achievable but can be challenging. They are maternal mouthbrooders, and successful breeding is more likely in a species-specific tank. Male fish exhibit more vibrant colors and slightly larger size compared to females and subdominant males. Dominant males display intense coloration during breeding periods to attract females for mating. Once the female lays her eggs, she carries them in her mouth for up to three weeks before releasing the fry.

Habitat and Distribution

In their natural habitat, Super Vc 10 Haps are found in rocky areas, particularly those covered in sediment and algae, within Lake Malawi. Their distribution spans the southern region of the lake, emphasizing areas from Thumbi Island West to Zambo, along the Nankumba Peninsula, and extending to Nkhata Bay.
