General Description:
One of the more popular species in the hobby, Protomelas Taeniolatus is similar to P. fenestratus, with various color forms existing. Common morphs include "Red Empress," "Super Red Empress," and "Blue Fire."
Aquarium Setup:
For this species, it is recommended to have a tank size of at least 200 litres with rocky areas for caves and hiding spots, along with open spaces for swimming. A sandy substrate is ideal.
Behaviour:
Protomelas Taeniolatus is peaceful but territorial, requiring a large tank if keeping more than one male. Suitable tankmates include Aulonocara, Copadichromis, and other peaceful Malawi species. Males are territorial and are more suited to a harem with several females.
Feeding and Diet:
These fish mainly feed on algae and microorganisms in nature and require a high-fiber diet in captivity. A significant portion of their diet should consist of vegetable matter like spirulina flakes, while live and frozen brine shrimp, Daphnia, and bloodworms serve as beneficial supplements. Avoid meaty foods to prevent health issues.
Reproduction & Dimorphism:
Protomelas Taeniolatus is a maternal mouthbrooder, with females carrying eggs for about three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Males are larger and far more colorful than females, displaying extended dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins.
Habitat and Distribution:
Endemic to Lake Malawi, this species thrives in rocky areas of shallow, clear water with no sediment. They have a widespread distribution within the lake.
