Behaviour

The Southern Mouth-Brooder can exhibit aggression towards other species in the lower regions of the aquarium. It is recommended to keep them with larger tanks or suitable tank mates such as larger African tetras, rainbowfish, and hatchetfish. Male Southern Mouth-Brooders are notably aggressive towards each other; therefore, it is advisable to maintain only one male in a harem scenario with multiple females, especially in smaller tanks to prevent territorial issues and encourage successful breeding.

Feeding and Diet

These cichlids are versatile eaters and will accept most foods offered. It is suggested to provide a balanced diet that includes high-quality cichlid pellets as a staple, supplemented with live and frozen foods to ensure proper nutrition and varied intake.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction in the Southern Mouth-Brooder is relatively straightforward. They are maternal mouth-brooders, with the male forming a large territory for breeding. When ready to breed, the male will entice a female to spawn with him in a prepared pit. The male has vibrant colors, distinguishing him from the females. The female holds the eggs in her mouth until they hatch, and the fry can be fed brine shrimp nauplii and other suitable foods from birth.

Aquarium Setup

For a Southern Mouth-Brooder, the aquarium setup should include ample hiding spaces like clay pot caves, driftwood, and roots. While plants are not mandatory, they offer additional coverage. A sand or fine gravel substrate is recommended as the male may dig when preparing for spawning.

Habitat and Distribution

Found in diverse biotopes such as streams, lakes, and ponds, the Southern Mouth-Brooder inhabits regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Angola, and other countries spanning Southern Africa. Certain populations can even tolerate slightly brackish conditions.

Always ensure water parameters align closely with their requirements—moderate hardness ranging from 5-12 degrees dH, a pH between 6.5-7.5, and a temperature maintained between 22-25°C for their optimal health and well-being.
