General Description
The Bumblebee Cichlid, scientifically known as Pseudotropheus crabro, is a species originating from deepwater caves in Lake Malawi, Africa. It boasts a striking coloration featuring a golden yellow base adorned with vertical brown to black bars that run along the length of its body. This fish is commonly referred to as the Hornet Cichlid or Chameleon Cichlid.
Aquarium Setup
To accommodate the Bumblebee Cichlid in captivity, an aquarium setup with multiple rocks and caves is recommended to mimic its natural habitat. Providing a sandy bottom with ample spaces for territorial establishment enhances their well-being. Utilizing a laterite-based substrate aids in maintaining the high pH and alkalinity levels necessary for these fish. Referring to the table, the minimum tank size required for this species is 28 liters.
Behaviour
Characterized by an aggressive temperament, the Bumblebee Cichlid is best suited for a cichlid community aquarium setup. When breeding, it is beneficial to keep males accompanied by at least three females. The female takes on the role of spawning on a flat rock, protecting the eggs in her mouth until the male fertilizes them. Subsequently, she diligently tends to the eggs for approximately three weeks before releasing the fry.
Feeding and Diet
As an omnivorous species, the diet of the Bumblebee Cichlid should consist of a variety of foods rich in vegetable matter such as flake, pellets, and leafy seaweeds. Additionally, supplementing their diet with meaty plankton-rich foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms ensures adequate nutrition. For the fry, feeding options include newly hatched brine shrimp, daphnia, or crushed flake food.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
