Behaviour

Reganochromis Calliurus is a peaceful fish that thrives when kept in pairs in the aquarium, as they can become territorial once they find a partner. They should not be housed with boisterous species, such as mbuna, or other Tanganyikans with different dietary requirements. Good tankmates for Reganochromis Calliurus include Gnathochromis permaxillaris and Frontosa. When maintaining more than one pair, a large aquarium is necessary to provide ample space for each pair to establish their territories.

Feeding and Diet

Reganochromis Calliurus will accept a variety of foods but prefers live and frozen options as the main components of its diet. While vegetable matter is not a part of their natural diet, it is crucial to ensure that any meaty fare offered is not of animal origin to meet their dietary needs effectively.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Reproduction in Reganochromis Calliurus is possible but can be challenging. They are bi-parental mouth-brooders, with both parents sharing brooding duties. Spawning occurs in a cave, with the parents often swapping the brood between them. It is recommended to maintain a group of at least 6-8 young fish to allow natural pairing. There are no external sexual differences in this species, and vent examination is the primary method for sexing, typically reserved for expert fishkeepers.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to Lake Tanganyika, Reganochromis Calliurus is a deep-water species commonly found in coastal areas at depths exceeding 60 meters. They prefer habitats with sandy or muddy substrates for foraging and breeding activities.

Aquarium Setup

For a suitable aquarium setup, a minimum tank size of 200 litres is recommended. A sparse environment with a sand substrate is ideal for Reganochromis Calliurus. Adding some rocky structures around the back of the aquarium can provide breeding sites and a sense of security for the fish. Water conditions should maintain a pH range of 8.0-9.2, hardness of 8-25 dH, and a temperature range of 24-27°C.
