General Description
Satanoperca Rhynchitis, previously known as S. sp. 'red lips', is a species of cichlid from the family Cichlidae. It can be identified by its distinctive red lips in adult specimens and lacks dark blotches or bands on its body. This species has specific morphological characteristics that set it apart from other Satanoperca species, including a unique dorsal-fin ray count and scale arrangements.
Aquarium Setup
When setting up an aquarium for Satanoperca Rhynchitis, it is crucial to provide a soft, sandy substrate to mimic their natural feeding behavior. The tank should have dim lighting, driftwood pieces, and scattered roots or branches for enrichment. Water quality is paramount, requiring filtration with regular 50-70% water changes to maintain stable conditions. Mechanical filtration is important to prevent sand blockages in the system, and the species thrives in soft, acidic water.
Behaviour
S. rhynchitis displays peaceful behavior unless breeding, showing a preference for loose aggregations. It is gregarious and forms dominance hierarchies within groups. Juveniles exhibit strong grouping instincts, and maintaining them in small numbers can lead to increased aggression towards weaker individuals. Tankmates should be peaceful species that share similar environmental conditions to avoid conflict.
Feeding and Diet
As benthophagous "eartheaters," Satanoperca species feed by sifting through substrate for food items. Their diet consists of small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, organic detritus, and plant material. In captivity, they readily accept a variety of high-quality prepared foods, live or frozen options like bloodworms and Artemia, and vegetables. Feeding smaller portions multiple times a day mimics their natural browsing behavior, supporting optimal growth and health.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
S. rhynchitis is an ovophilous maternal mouthbrooder, with breeding achievable in home aquariums. Sexing is challenging, and forming pairs naturally is advised. Courtship involves male initiation and territorial defense, with eggs collected by the female for brooding. Fry are easy to feed once free-swimming, but brooding females should be separated in community tanks to protect the offspring. Adult females tend to be slightly smaller and deeper-bodied than males.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in river systems of French Guiana, including Oyapock, Approuague, and Kourou, S. rhynchitis inhabits environments with variable water flow and turbidity. The species is adapted to tropical rainforest conditions with distinct wet seasons. It shares its native waters with various fish species like Corydoras and Apistogramma. The exact habitat preferences of Satanoperca rhynchitis remain unconfirmed, but they likely occupy areas with moderate to strong water movement.
