General Description
The Sciaenochromis Fryeri, commonly known as the Electric Blue Hap, is a striking species of cichlid. Previously classified as Sciaenochromis ahli, this fish species boasts a vibrant electric blue coloration in males, with variations in fin patterns among morphs. Females are more subdued in appearance, and distinguishing juveniles based on color is challenging.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, the Electric Blue Hap requires a tank size of at least 300 liters, set up with a sandy substrate and rock formations to create cave networks. The water conditions should have a pH range of 7.6-8.8, hardness between 10-25°dH, and a temperature of 24-28°C.
Behaviour
This species is not overly aggressive but possesses robust tendencies. It should not coexist with mbuna but thrives alongside Nimbochromis venustus, Cyrtocara moorii, Protomelas, and Copadichromis. Maintaining several females per male is recommended to minimize male aggression. Male Electric Blue Haps have been known to interbreed with females of other genera, particularly Aulonocara, so caution is advised when selecting tank mates.
Feeding and Diet
Predatory in nature, S. fryeri accepts a varied diet in captivity, including live, frozen, and dried food. A vegetable-based diet is unnecessary for this species, as they do not require animal meat for nourishment.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Electric Blue Haps is relatively uncomplicated. They are maternal mouthbrooders, ideally spawning in a harem setup with one male and at least three females. The male showcases mating behaviors around rock territories, where females deposit eggs for fertilization. The females carry the fertilized eggs for approximately three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, which can consume small live foods immediately.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to Lake Malawi, the Electric Blue Hap inhabits rocky shorelines and sandy zones within the lake. While not a common species, S. fryeri has a widespread distribution throughout Lake Malawi, thriving in rocky environments near the shorelines.
