General Description
The Ellioti Cichlid, scientifically known as Thorichthys ellioti, is a freshwater fish species originating from the Atlantic slope of the Papaloapán River basin in Mexico. These tropical fish exhibit an iridescent yellow body with red accents on their underbelly and dorsal fin, complemented by neon blue dots clustered around the eyes and mouth. With females growing up to 6 inches, they are slightly smaller and rounder compared to males, often sporting a distinct dark blotch in the middle of the dorsal fin. Both sexes boast vibrant colors, enhancing their overall appearance.
Aquarium Setup
To house Ellioti Cichlids successfully, an aquarium of at least 50 gallons in size is recommended. The tank should feature a substrate of soft, fine sand for burrowing, along with ample rockwork or driftwood to serve as hiding spots and territorial boundaries. If incorporating live plants, opt for robust species potted with protected root surfaces. Maintaining water conditions within a temperature range of 77°F-82°F and a pH level between 7.0 and 8.0 is crucial for mimicking their natural habitat.
Behaviour
The Ellioti Cichlid is considered somewhat territorial, particularly during the breeding season, exhibiting aggression towards smaller tank mates of the same species. Providing plenty of space for swimming and numerous hiding places can help mitigate territorial disputes among tank inhabitants.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivorous creatures, Ellioti Cichlids have a varied diet that includes prepared and frozen foods like bloodworms, tubifex, ocean plankton, as well as flake food and Cichlid pellets. They are opportunistic feeders and will readily consume a range of food types, contributing to their overall health and vitality.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Male and female Ellioti Cichlids form devoted mating pairs, actively engaging in caring for and rearing their fry. The female typically deposits 100-500 eggs on cleaned rocks or flat surfaces, which the male fertilizes. The eggs hatch within 72 hours, and the fry are meticulously protected in pits excavated in the substrate. Both parents diligently care for the fry until they reach approximately 1/2 inch in size.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Ellioti Cichlids prefer lower and middle river valleys characterized by sandy and rocky substrates with minimal vegetation. Found in the Atlantic slope of the Papaloapán River basin in Mexico, these cichlids thrive in clear waters with suitable hiding spots and territories for establishing their presence.
