General Description
The Butterikoferi Cichlid, scientifically known as Tilapia butterkofferi, is a striking fish commonly referred to as the Zebra Tilapia due to its distinct black and white striped pattern. This species, belonging to the Cichlidae family, hails from the river systems of Western Africa. Initially peaceful as juveniles, these cichlids can grow to be territorial and aggressive as they mature. With a maximum size reaching 30.5 cm, they boast an eye-catching coloration of black and white vertical stripes.
Aquarium Setup
To house the Butterikoferi Cichlid successfully, an aquarium of at least 70 gallons is recommended to accommodate their territorial nature. Setting up the tank with plenty of rocks for territory demarcation and a medium-sized gravel substrate planted with hardy flora is ideal for replicating their natural habitat. Due to their aggressive behavior towards smaller fish, it is crucial to house them with similarly sized tank mates or in a single-species setup (see table).
Behaviour
As the Butterikoferi Cichlid matures, its temperament tends towards aggression, particularly during breeding periods. These fish are known to exhibit territorial behavior, emphasizing the need for ample space and defined territories within the aquarium setup. Understanding their inclination towards dominance can aid in managing their behavior in a communal tank environment.
Feeding and Diet
This omnivorous species thrives on a varied diet consisting of both meaty and vegetable-based foods. Offering live food such as brine shrimp, earthworms, and mosquito larvae is beneficial for their overall health. Including a high-quality flake and tablet food rich in vegetable matter in their diet ensures they receive essential nutrients for optimal growth and well-being.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Butterikoferi Cichlids engage in substrate spawning, creating a pit to deposit their eggs during the breeding process. When breeding, these cichlids can exhibit heightened aggression, especially towards intruders near their spawning site. Understanding their reproductive behaviors and providing suitable conditions can encourage successful breeding within a controlled aquarium environment.
Habitat and Distribution
Native to the river systems of Western Africa, the Butterikoferi Cichlid thrives in freshwater environments characterized by temperatures ranging from 22.2°C to 27.8°C and pH levels between 7.8 to 8.6. Their natural habitat features rocky areas and ample hiding spots, reflecting the need for similar elements in an aquarium setup to simulate their origin and ensure their well-being.
