General Description

Crenicichla proteus, commonly known as the Proteus Pike Cichlid, is a small but aggressive cichlid species belonging to the Cichlidae family. Typically, it reaches a maximum size of around 15.0cm and is native to regions in Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. This species is known for its territorial behavior and should be kept with caution, especially regarding tankmates.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for the Proteus Pike Cichlid, it is recommended to have a minimum tank size of 140 litres. The tank should include a sand substrate, as this species tends to dig and rearrange decor. Providing rockwork to create caves for hiding spots is essential, and sturdy plants, preferably potted or rooted to bogwood, should be included. The water conditions should maintain a pH level of 6.0-7.0, hardness of 0-15 dH, and a temperature range of 24-27°C (see table).

Behaviour

Known for its aggressive nature, the Proteus Pike Cichlid can exhibit territorial behavior, especially towards conspecifics. Therefore, it is advisable to keep them either in a species-only setup or with larger cichlids that can hold their own. They are opportunistic feeders and may consume smaller tankmates if they can fit in their sizable mouths.

Feeding and Diet

To ensure optimal health, a varied diet for the Proteus Pike Cichlid is crucial. This should include high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, as well as live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter such as spirulina or algae wafers. Offering a diverse diet will help mimic their natural feeding habits.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

As of now, breeding the Proteus Pike Cichlid in captivity has not been achieved in the hobby. In terms of sexual dimorphism, males tend to be larger in size and may display more prominent markings compared to females.

Habitat and Distribution

In the wild, Crenicichla proteus is commonly found in well-planted shallows within the aquatic habitats of Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. Specifically, their distribution ranges from the Rio Napo and Rio Putumayo in Ecuador, the Rio Ucayali to the Rio Pebas in Peru, and populations have also been recorded from the Rio Purus in Brazil.
