General Description

The Tiger Pike Cichlid, scientifically known as Crenicichla Tigrina, is a beautifully marked species that is not commonly found in the aquarium hobby in the UK. Belonging to the Cichlidae family under Cichlinae category, this species can grow up to a maximum size of 30.0cm.

Aquarium Setup

For housing the Tiger Pike Cichlid, a minimum tank size of 750 litres is recommended. The tank should have a sand substrate, as these cichlids are likely to dig and rearrange decor to their liking. Providing rockwork for cave formation is essential, as pikes prefer having a retreat area. Sturdy plants, preferably rooted to bogwood or potted, should also be included in the setup (see table). Water conditions should maintain a pH level ranging from 6.0 to 7.0, a temperature between 23-26°C, and a water hardness of 0-20°dH.

Behaviour

Known for its aggressive nature, the Tiger Pike Cichlid can display hostility, especially towards conspecifics. Due to their predatory instincts, they are likely to consume smaller fish that they can fit into their large mouths. While they can be housed with other large cichlids, it's advisable to keep them in a species-only setup to avoid conflicts.

Feeding and Diet

Feeding the Tiger Pike Cichlid a varied diet is crucial for their optimal health. A balanced diet should consist of high-quality cichlid pellets or flakes, live or frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp, meaty options such as prawns and mussels, and vegetable matter in the form of spirulina or algae wafers.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

There are currently no reports of Tiger Pike Cichlids breeding in the hobby. In terms of sexual dimorphism, the males of this species exhibit prominent black spots and stripes, which is where the common name is derived from.

Habitat and Distribution

Endemic to the Rio Trombetas in the Brazilian Amazon, the Tiger Pike Cichlid is primarily found in this freshwater habitat. Notably, this species thrives in the specific environmental conditions of the Rio Trombetas, making it a unique and intriguing addition to the cichlid family.
