General Description:
The Vundu, scientifically known as Heterobranchus Longifilis, is among the largest freshwater fish species in Africa. It stands out from similar members of the genus due to its notably elongated adipose fin. Ideally suited for dedicated hobbyists or public aquaria, this species is a challenging inhabitant for standard home aquariums.

Aquarium Setup:
The Vundu necessitates a minimum tank size of 680 litres with efficient filtration due to its high waste production. Decor is not essential, favoring an undecorated tank with a soft substrate. Alternatively, it can thrive in a suitably-sized tropical pond, making it a versatile option for differing aquatic environments (see table).

Behaviour:
This species is highly predatory and should be housed without tankmates as it preys on any fish small enough to fit in its mouth. Even larger tankmates may fall victim to its aggressive tendencies.

Feeding and Diet:
The Vundu is a voracious omnivore that will consume a varied diet of dried pellets, meaty frozen foods, and vegetable matter. Feeding adults every other day is sufficient to prevent overeating in this insatiable fish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:
Reproduction of the Vundu has been achieved through hormone injection in controlled settings, rendering breeding projects impractical for hobbyists. Sexual dimorphism is observable, with females typically exhibiting a thicker body compared to males.

Habitat and Distribution:
This species thrives in deep freshwater bodies such as rivers, lakes, and ponds. Its range spans across various regions in Africa, indicating a widespread distribution across the continent.
