Behaviour:

The Kottelatlimia katik is not particularly robust and should be housed with smaller, non-competitive fish species. Ideal tankmates include small schooling cyprinids, anabantoids like Sphaerichthys or Parosphromenus spp., and similarly-sized characins. Substrate-dwelling loaches such as Pangio, Acanthopsoides, or smaller Lepidocephalichthys spp. are also compatible. Care must be taken with smaller nemacheilids as some can be territorial or aggressive. Kottelatlimia spp. are peaceful with conspecifics and other fish but may prey on eggs or fry. They thrive in groups of at least four individuals.

Feeding and Diet:

These micropredators sift mouthfuls of substrate through their gills to extract insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other small prey. In captivity, offer a varied diet consisting of fine-grade sinking dried foods, live and frozen Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Tubifex, bloodworms, among others. Larger food items should be avoided as the fish cannot ingest them efficiently.

Reproduction & Dimorphism:

Reproduction of Kottelatlimia katik remains unrecorded in aquarium settings. Mature males exhibit an enlargement of the first branched pectoral-fin ray with 6-7 fine serrae along the inner edge. Adult females are typically slightly larger and heavier-bodied than males.

Habitat and Distribution:

Kottelatlimia katik is commonly found in small, slow-moving forest streams associated with blackwater peat swamps. These habitats are shaded, have low dissolved mineral content, and can have pH levels as low as 3.0-4.0 due to decaying plant material. The species was described in Malaysia and Indonesia, with a similar-looking fish possibly found in Sarawak, Borneo.

Aquarium Setup:

The Kottelatlimia katik requires a soft, sandy substrate as it spends time buried or partially buried. Coarser gravel can cause stress and inhibit feeding behavior. Decorate the tank with water-worn rocks, driftwood branches, and tree roots, leaving open sandy patches for movement. Dim lighting is suitable unless growing plants, which should be able to attach to decor. This species is intolerant to organic waste accumulation and thrives in clean, mature aquarium conditions.
