General Description

Lepidocephalichthys Annandalei, commonly known as annandalei loach, is a small micropredator belonging to the family Cobitidae. This species exhibits unique caudal fin patterning, with distinct v-shaped markings and dark blotches. They have truncated caudal fins, short barbels, and moderate to large adult sizes.

Aquarium Setup

When setting up an aquarium for L. Annandalei, a soft sandy substrate is essential as these loaches spend time buried with only their eyes visible. Coarse gravel should be avoided as it can cause stress and inhibit feeding behavior. Decorate the tank with water-worn rocks, driftwood, and tree roots to provide hiding spots and shaded areas. Ensure low lighting, unless growing plants, and add leaf litter for a natural environment. Avoid high flow rates and provide adequate oxygenation. Due to their jumping behavior, secure the tank well and prevent small specimens from entering filter intakes.

Behaviour

Lepidocephalichthys species are peaceful both among themselves and with other tankmates. They prefer the company of conspecifics and thrive in groups of four or more individuals. They do well with fish that occupy the upper water column, like Trichopodus, Trichogaster, Trichopsis, or certain Danio species. The presence of such fish reduces their timidity as they use fish in the upper column as warning signs in nature.

Feeding and Diet

As micropredators, L. Annandalei sifts mouthfuls of substrate to extract insect larvae and small crustaceans. In captivity, they accept sinking dried foods but should be supplemented with small live and frozen fare like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworm for a balanced diet.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the breeding habits of L. Annandalei in captivity is limited, although they are presumed to be seasonal spawners in their natural habitat. Mature males display enlarged pectoral fins with fused, thickened innermost rays, while adult females are heavier-bodied and slightly larger than males.

Habitat and Distribution

These loaches are commonly found in shallow, slow-moving sections of streams, swamps, oxbows, and paddy fields in the Ganges and Brahmaputra river systems in Nepal, Bangladesh, and several Indian states. They thrive in heavily-vegetated environments with soft mud or silt substrates and can adapt to varying water conditions, including stagnant habitats with low oxygen levels.
