General Description

There are currently over 180 described species of Corydoras, belonging to the family Callichthyidae. Corydoras, commonly known as "corys," are characterized by their peaceful nature and their distinct appearance with bony plates along their flanks. They are among the most popular fish in the aquarium hobby due to their cute looks and ease of care.

Aquarium Setup

For a suitable aquarium setup for Corydoras Geryi, a substrate of fine sand is recommended, along with shelter in the form of smooth rocks, bogwood, and dense planting. Providing floating cover, surface turbulence, and well-oxygenated water is essential. It is advised not to use undergravel filtration and to maintain a clean substrate to prevent barbel infections.

Behaviour

Corydoras are known for their peaceful temperament, making them suitable for community tanks with small, non-aggressive tankmates. They thrive when kept in groups of at least six individuals, as they are more active and confident in the presence of conspecifics. Despite being bottom-dwellers, they are not efficient cleaners and should be provided with sinking varieties of food for proper nutrition.

Feeding and Diet

Corydoras are omnivores and readily accept sinking dried foods, along with small live and frozen options like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. A varied diet is essential to ensure their optimal health, and they should not solely rely on scavenging for food in the tank.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Information on the reproduction of Corydoras Geryi in captivity is limited. However, a breeding tank setup with appropriate substrate and vegetation, along with conditioning the fish on a varied diet, is recommended. Breeding can be triggered by large water changes with cooler water. Sexual dimorphism is evident in females being rounder and broader-bodied, especially when carrying eggs.

Habitat and Distribution

Corydoras Geryi is found in the Rio Mamoré basin in Bolivia. In their natural habitat, they inhabit freshwater environments with specific water parameters including a pH range of 6.0-7.2, hardness of 2-15 degrees dH, and a temperature range of 22-26 degrees Celsius.
