General Description
The Corydoras Napoensis, commonly known as Napo Cory, belongs to the family Callichthyidae. With over 180 described species, Corydoras are among the most popular South American fish genera in the aquarium hobby. They are peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish with a distinct armored appearance due to their bony plates.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal thriving, replicate an Amazonian biotope setup for C. napoensis, featuring river sand substrate, driftwood, twisted roots, and dried leaves. Alternatively, a well-planted tank can also suit them well. Avoid undergravel filtration, maintain clean substrates, and ensure dim lighting in the tank.
Behaviour
Napo Corys are peaceful and best kept in groups of at least six to enhance their confidence and activity levels. They are suitable for community tanks but should not be housed with large or aggressive tankmates. They exhibit schooling behavior in nature and benefit from a group environment in captivity.
Feeding and Diet
Being omnivorous, Napo Corys have an easy-to-feed diet. Sinking pellets or tablets serve as the staple, supplemented with live and frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms. It's essential to offer a varied diet to keep them healthy and thriving.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Napo Corys involves setting up a breeding tank with favorable conditions, higher male-to-female ratios, and varied diets to induce spawning. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with females being rounder and broader-bodied, especially when carrying eggs.
Habitat and Distribution
Napo Corys inhabit small tributaries, creeks, flooded forest areas, and sand banks in regions like the Rio Napo, Rio Aguarico, Rio Amazonas, and Rio Nanay in Peru and Colombia. They are adaptable to various water conditions within a range of 22-26°C temperature, 1-12°dH hardness, and pH of 6.0-7.4.
