General Description
With over 180 described species, Corydoras are among the most speciose of all South American fish genera, popular in the aquarium hobby due to their diversity and appealing appearance. These armored catfish lack scales, featuring bony plates along their flanks and sharp pectoral fin spines that can cause a stinging sensation if mishandled.
Aquarium Setup
For Corydoras Narcissus, a tank size of at least 113 litres is recommended, with a preference for group setups of six or more individuals. Mimicking natural Amazon biotopes with river sand, driftwood, and dried leaves is ideal. Providing water flow or ensuring high oxygenation is crucial, along with avoiding undergravel filtration and maintaining a clean substrate.
Behaviour
Characterized by peaceful and community-friendly behavior, Corydoras thrive in groups and should not be housed with larger or aggressive tankmates. They exhibit bottom-dwelling tendencies and are known as facultative air breathers, surfacing periodically to gulp air. Proper care is essential to prevent infections in their barbels and maintain their well-being.
Feeding and Diet
As omnivores, Corydoras have a simple diet requiring a high-quality sinking pellet or tablet as a staple, supplemented with live and frozen foods like Daphnia, Artemia, and bloodworms. Proper feeding ensures their nutritional needs are met and contributes to their overall health and vitality.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Corydoras Narcissus involves specific conditions, such as a breeding tank with suitable substrate and vegetation, along with a higher ratio of males to females for successful spawning. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with females being rounder and broader-bodied, especially when carrying eggs, making sexing relatively straightforward.
Habitat and Distribution
Endemic to the Rio Purus in Brazil, Corydoras Narcissus inhabit small tributaries, creeks, flooded forest areas, and sandbanks in their natural habitat. Their distribution highlights their preference for freshwater ecosystems conducive to their benthic and schooling behaviors.
