General Description

The Flag-Tailed Panda Cory (Corydoras Oiapoquensis) is a peaceful species belonging to the Callichthyidae family. It reaches a maximum size of 5.5cm and is typically found in the upper reaches of the Rio Oyapock in French Guiana and Brazil.

Aquarium Setup

For an optimal aquarium setup, it is recommended to maintain the Flag-Tailed Panda Cory in a tank with a minimum size of 50 litres. The tank should contain fine sand substrate, smooth rocks, bogwood, and areas of thick planting for shelter. Additionally, providing floating cover and ensuring good surface turbulence and flow are beneficial. It's crucial to avoid undergravel filtration and keep the substrate clean as these catfish are sensitive to unhygienic conditions.

Behaviour

Flag-Tailed Panda Cory exhibits a very peaceful demeanor, making it suitable for various community tanks. It is advised not to house them with larger or aggressive species. Ideal tankmates include small characins, cyprinids, anabantoids, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful catfish. Keeping them in groups of at least 6 individuals is recommended, as they are more active and confident in the presence of conspecifics.

Feeding and Diet

These fish are omnivores and will accept a diet comprising sinking dried foods, small live, and frozen varieties such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. Offering a varied diet ensures the Flag-Tailed Panda Cory remains in optimal condition.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding the Flag-Tailed Panda Cory can be achieved by setting up a breeding tank with appropriate conditions, including a varied diet, specific water parameters, and proper oxygenation. The mating process involves specific behaviors and interactions between males and females. Sexual dimorphism is not as easily distinguishable as females do not develop as broad-bodied as in other Corydoras species, although they tend to grow larger than males.

Habitat and Distribution

The natural habitat of the Flag-Tailed Panda Cory is limited to the upper regions of the Rio Oyapock. This species is typically found alongside a similar congener, Corydoras condiscipulus, with the main difference being the snout length and distribution within the river.
