General Description
The Corydoras Ourastigma, commonly known as the Long-Nosed Smudge Spot Cory, is a peaceful species suitable for community tanks. Its distinguishable long snout sets it apart from other similar Corydoras species, with a grey to black coloration and a smudged blotch on its body.
Aquarium Setup
For a thriving environment, a tank size of at least 71 liters with fine sand substrate, smooth rocks, bogwood chunks for shelter, thick planting, and floating cover is recommended. Well-oxygenated water with surface turbulence and flow is crucial, avoiding undergravel filtration to prevent barbel damage.
Behaviour
Known for its peaceable nature, the Corydoras Ourastigma thrives in groups of at least 6 individuals, displaying increased confidence and activity in the presence of conspecifics. Suitable tankmates include small characins, cyprinids, anabantoids, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful catfish.
Feeding and Diet
These catfish are omnivores accepting sinking dried foods, small live, and frozen varieties like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworm. A varied diet enhances their overall health and condition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
While there is limited information on captive breeding, setting up a breeding tank with specific conditions like temperature around 75°F, pH of 6.5-7, and a higher ratio of males to females is recommended. Spawning behavior involves males courting females and fertilizing eggs, usually laid on tank glass.
Habitat and Distribution
Originating from the Rio Purus basin in Brazil, the Corydoras Ourastigma's natural habitat information is not extensively documented.
Sexual Dimorphism
Sexing this species is easier from above, where females appear rounder and broader-bodied, especially when filled with eggs.
