General Description
Corydoras Pinheiroi, belonging to the Callichthyidae family within the Corydoradinae subfamily, resembles C. sterbai but lacks the distinct orange pectoral spines found in the latter species. This species, although rare in the aquarium trade, is characterized by its peaceful nature, suitable for various community tank setups. It can reach a maximum size of 6.5cm.
Aquarium Setup
For optimal care, a minimum tank size of 71 litres is recommended. The tank should be set up with fine sand substrate, smooth rocks, bogwood chunks for shelter, and densely planted areas. Providing floating cover along with adequate surface turbulence and water flow is essential. Avoid undergravel filtration and ensure the substrate is meticulously clean due to the species' sensitivity to unhygienic conditions.
Behaviour
Corydoras Pinheiroi is known to be highly peaceful and thrives well in community tanks. It should not be housed with larger or aggressive tankmates. Keeping them in groups of at least 6 individuals is advised, as this enhances their confidence and activity level. Compatible tankmates include small characins, cyprinids, anabantoids, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful catfish species.
Feeding and Diet
These catfish will readily accept sinking dried foods, along with small live and frozen options such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. A varied diet ensures the fish remain in optimal health condition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
While captive breeding information is limited, breeding setups typically involve a tank with suitable dimensions, substrate, filtration, vegetation, and specific water parameters. Successful breeding may require conditioning the fish on a diverse diet, adjusting water conditions, and observing spawning behavior. Sexual dimorphism is noticeable, with females appearing rounder and broader-bodied when full of eggs.
Habitat and Distribution
Originating from Rondônia, Brazil, the specific habitat details of Corydoras Pinheiroi are currently unknown. However, the species is native to this region and is found in freshwater environments characterized by specific water parameters such as a pH range of 6.0-7.2, hardness of 3-15°dH, and temperatures between 25-28°C.
