General Description
The Corydoras Reticulatus, commonly known as the Reticulated Cory or network cory, is part of the Callichthyidae family and Corydoradinae category. This species, reaching a maximum size of 6.0cm, is well-suited for beginner aquarists due to its peaceful nature and adaptability to community tanks. Originating from the Lower Amazon Basin in Brazil, these fish are easily recognizable by their distinct reticulated pattern.
Aquarium Setup
For housing Corydoras Reticulatus, an aquarium size of at least 71 litres is recommended (see table). Setting up the tank with fine sand substrate, smooth rocks, chunks of bogwood, and dense vegetation provides the necessary shelter and hiding spots for these fish. It is crucial to maintain well-oxygenated water by ensuring proper surface turbulence and flow. Avoid using undergravel filtration and keep the substrate clean to prevent any harm to the sensitive barbels of this species.
Behaviour
Known for their peaceful demeanor, Reticulated Corydoras are best kept with smaller, non-aggressive tankmates like small characins, cyprinids, anabantoids, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful catfish. It is imperative to maintain them in groups of at least 6 individuals as they exhibit more confidence and activity in the presence of conspecifics.
Feeding and Diet
These fish readily accept sinking dried foods, small live options, and frozen varieties like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. To ensure optimal health, providing a varied diet is essential. Feeding a mix of live, frozen, and dried foods helps keep the fish in prime condition.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Although information on captive breeding is limited, the breeding process for Corydoras Reticulatus is likely similar to other Corydoras species. Setting up a breeding tank with the right conditions, maintaining a higher ratio of males to females, and conditioning the group with diverse foods can encourage spawning. When breeding, observe spawning behavior characterized by increased activity, courting rituals, and egg-laying. The typical method involves male fertilization of eggs released by the female, followed by careful egg handling post-spawning.
Habitat and Distribution
Found in the Lower Amazon Basin in Brazil, information regarding the natural habitat of Corydoras Reticulatus is currently unreported. In the wild, these fish are believed to inhabit similar freshwater environments typical of the Amazon Basin.
The water parameters suitable for these fish include a hardness range of 2-15 dH, pH levels between 6.0-7.2, and a temperature range of 22-26°C.
