General Description
The Flagtail Cory, scientifically known as Corydoras Robineae, is a strikingly-patterned cory that has only recently been bred in aquarium settings. It is also commonly referred to as the bannertail cory and belongs to the Callichthyidae family. This charming freshwater fish species can grow up to 7.0cm in size and is native to the Upper Rio Negro in Brazil.
Aquarium Setup
For housing Flagtail Corydoras, it is recommended to have a minimum tank size of 71 litres (see table). Setting up the aquarium with a fine sand substrate, smooth rocks, chunks of bogwood, dense plantings, and some floating cover is ideal for these fish. Ensure well-oxygenated water with surface turbulence and flow, avoiding undergravel filtration due to their sensitivity to dirty substrates.
Behaviour
Flagtail Corydoras exhibit very peaceful behavior and are compatible with various community tank mates. They should not be housed with aggressive or significantly larger species. Suitable tank companions include small characins, cyprinids, anabantoids, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful catfish. To promote their confidence and activity levels, it is advisable to maintain them in groups of at least 6 individuals.
Feeding and Diet
These fish will readily accept sinking dried foods, along with small live and frozen options like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and chopped earthworms. A varied diet is essential for their overall health and well-being.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Breeding Flagtail Corydoras might be challenging, but it can be achieved similarly to other Corydoras species. Providing the appropriate breeding tank setup, conditioning the fish with a diverse diet, and observing spawning behaviors are crucial steps. Sexual dimorphism is evident in females being rounder and broader-bodied, especially when full of eggs.
Habitat and Distribution
In their natural habitat, Flagtail Corydoras are found in the main river and its tributaries within the Upper Rio Negro, Brazil. The water conditions preferred by these fish include a hardness of 5-12 dH, pH range of 6.5-7.5, and a temperature between 21-26°C.
