General Description

Barbus Candens, also known as the Congo Barb, is a rare species in the aquarium trade originating from the Congo River basin in Africa. It exhibits distinct coloration and markings, with males displaying dark stripe-like patterns on the fins.

Aquarium Setup

To house B. Candens, a tank of at least 40 liters with soft, sandy substrate and ample plant cover is advised. Optimal conditions include dim lighting and the presence of driftwood and leaf litter to mimic its natural habitat. Filtering should be gentle to mimic the slow-moving waters it inhabits.

Behaviour

Known for its shy and somewhat timid nature, B. Candens prefers the company of similarly-sized, peaceful tankmates to avoid intimidation or food competition. It exhibits a hierarchical social structure within a group and should ideally be kept in a school of eight or more individuals to prevent bullying.

Feeding and Diet

In the aquarium, B. Candens accepts a variety of foods including live and frozen options like Daphnia and Artemia. A balanced diet of both dried and live foods enhances coloration and promotes breeding conditions in these fish.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

Breeding B. Candens involves the scattering of eggs without parental care. Males display brighter colors with distinct markings on the fins, while females are slightly thicker-bodied. Successful breeding can be achieved with controlled conditions in a separate breeding tank.

Habitat and Distribution

Naturally found in slow-moving, shaded rainforest streams in the Congo River basin, B. Candens thrives in soft, acidic water with low hardness levels. Specific localities within its range include various streams and rivers in the Northern and Central parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
