General Description

The Lined Barb (Puntius Lineatus) is a Southeast Asian fish species belonging to the family Cyprinidae. It is one of four closely related, laterally-striped Puntius species found in Southeastern Asia. Adults of the species exhibit a unique fleshy structure on the lower lip forming a continuous postlabial groove, which distinguishes it from other similar species. The species may potentially be reclassified into a different genus in the future.

Aquarium Setup

For optimal care, the Lined Barb should be kept in an aquarium of at least 72 litres with a forest stream-type setup. Maintaining the tank as a heavily planted environment with soft substrate, dim lighting, roots, branches, and leaf litter resembling its natural habitat is essential. Adding robust aquatic plants like Microsorum, Taxiphyllum, or Cryptocoryne species is recommended. The water conditions should ideally have a hardness of 18-179 ppm, a pH range of 4.0-7.0, and a temperature between 20-26°C.

Behaviour

Being a schooling species by nature, the Lined Barb thrives in groups of at least 8-10 individuals. Keeping them in decent numbers reduces skittishness, enhances coloration display in males, and creates a more natural aesthetic in the aquarium. They are a peaceful addition to the community tank and are best kept alongside similarly sized cyprinids, cobitids, and selected anabantoids.

Feeding and Diet

In the wild, Lined Barbs forage on diatoms, algae, detritus, small insects, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, they readily accept small live and frozen foods like bloodworms, Daphnia, and Artemia. A varied diet supplemented with high-quality dried flakes and granules, including those with plant or algal content, ensures their nutritional needs are met and enhances their color vibrancy.

Reproduction & Dimorphism

There is limited recorded information on the reproduction of Lined Barbs. Adult males tend to be slightly smaller, slimmer, and exhibit more vivid coloration compared to females. To differentiate them from closely related species, it's essential to note that Lined Barbs have 0-1 pairs of barbels, a distinct feature that sets them apart.

Habitat and Distribution

Lined Barbs are native to Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra in Indonesia, and Borneo, encompassing Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei Darussalam. They are typically found in peat swamps, blackwater streams, and still waters with submerged grasses, aquatic plants, and dense riparian vegetation. These habitats have minimal dissolved mineral content, acidic pH levels as low as 3.0 or 4.0, and are adorned with fallen leaves, branches, and submerged tree roots.
