General Description
Acrossocheilus Paradoxus, also known as Barbus paradoxus, is a species of fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae. Native to Taiwan, mainland China, and parts of Vietnam and Laos, this species is characterized by its dark vertical bars on each flank, with each bar being two scales in width. It can grow up to 20.0cm in size and is distinguishable by its unique combination of physical characteristics, including fleshy lips, barbels, and a distinctive rostral fold.
Aquarium Setup
The tank setup for Acrossocheilus Paradoxus should mimic a flowing river environment. It is recommended to use a substrate of rocks, gravel, and water-worn boulders, along with driftwood roots and branches to create shaded areas. Hardy plant species like Microsorum, Bolbitis, or Anubias can be attached to the decor, and bright lighting can promote the growth of aufwuchs for the fish to graze on. Clean water conditions are essential, requiring regular 30-50% water changes, high dissolved oxygen levels, and moderate water movement.
Behaviour
Inhabiting subtropical streams and rivers at medium to high altitudes, Acrossocheilus Paradoxus is known to be intolerant to organic waste accumulation. They prefer stable water conditions and should be acclimatized to the aquarium slowly. The fish do not require torrent-like water flow but thrive with high oxygen levels and moderate water movement.
Feeding and Diet
These fish are known to feed on small benthic invertebrates and graze biofilm from rocks and solid surfaces. In an aquarium setting, they can be fed a varied diet consisting of high-quality flakes, pellets, small live or frozen invertebrates, and vegetable matter. Supplementing their diet with algae wafers or blanched vegetables can help mimic their natural feeding habits.
Reproduction & Dimorphism
Information on the specific reproduction and dimorphic characteristics of Acrossocheilus Paradoxus is limited. However, like many cyprinids, they are likely egg layers and may exhibit subtle differences in coloration or fin shape between males and females during the breeding season.
Habitat and Distribution
Acrossocheilus Paradoxus inhabits subtropical streams and small-to-medium sized rivers at medium to high altitudes. Its distribution includes parts of southern China, northern Vietnam, northern Laos, Taiwan, and specific regions in mainland China such as Fujian and Zhejiang provinces.
