General Description

Prior to the description of the Amblyrhynchichthys micracanthus species, the genus consisted of only one species, which means older records of A. truncatus in mainland Indochina actually refer to A. micracanthus. A. micracanthus can be distinguished from A. truncatus by characteristics such as a more truncated snout with a straight lateral profile, a shorter dorsal-fin spine, and a smaller eye when comparing individuals of similar sizes. The genus Amblyrhynchichthys is unique among cyprinids due to its extremely blunt snout, anteriorly located nostrils, stout last simple dorsal-fin ray, and a well-developed hyaline eyelid.
